Inspirational Women Celebrated at Executive Women of the Palm Beaches Leadership Awards | InFlorida News – InFlorida.com

Palm Beach, FL – April 17, 2019 – The Executive Women of the Palm Beaches Foundation, Inc. hosted their 36th Annual Luncheon to honor women in leadership. Emmy Award winning foreign correspondent Lara Logan was the guest speaker for this special award ceremony, which brings together inspirational women in the private, public, nonprofit, and volunteer sectors of the community. The day celebrates and recognizes a select number of these women, and it awards the day’s proceeds for educational scholarships for women who want to attend college and may not have the means to do so.

This year’s event was held at the Kravis Center in Palm Beach, where founding members mingled with the younger generation of business women. Enjoying a three course lunch, the women discussed their line of work and many spoke of juggling family-life with careers. The master of ceremonies for the event was CB12 news anchor Liz Quirantes, who introduced the award winners. Each winner gave an account of their career and the trials and tribulations they had to overcome. It was fascinating to see and hear that the award recipients spanned a number of generations, all with a common thread: “Support one another, be kind and respectful and be determined.”

Honorary chair Yvonne Boice delivered an inspirational speech stating, “As women we are expected to do it all and not be fearful. If you have never felt fear, you must not be human. I say analyze your fears, create a strategy and then a back up plan. Make sure you surround yourself with friends, mentors and advisors. We should not only discuss our failures and triumphs, but also our fears too.”

The award winners included: Beth Walton (President and Chief Executive officer of Town of Palm Beach United Way), Elizabeth Hamma (Senior Vice President of Hubbard Radio Palm Beach), Mary Lerardi (a long time member of the community and volunteer for numerous non profits), and Dr. Lisa Williams-Taylor (CEO at Children’s Services Council County). All delivered heartfelt and inspirational speeches, reflecting on their personal and career histories.

Lara Logan delivered an incredibly powerful speech that left a number of the audience humbled, appreciative, and even tearful. She shared incredible stories from her assignment in war zones, to her childhood memories. A mother of three, she feels very strongly about fighting for what you believe in and staying true to yourself, emphasizing, “I was raised by a very strong woman who constantly inspires me even though she died seventeen years ago. Even now when I have been through some tough times, she is the strength that I hold on to, a pillar in my life. My feet are so firmly planted in reality due to the house I grew up in. I was raised to know who I am, what I stand for, and we always knew that we were loved. I always think of that when I travel, and it’s one of the main reasons I have been able to do the work that I have done, for as long as I have.”

After hearing incredible stories from the award winners, founding members, the honorary chair and Lara Logan, many women in the audience felt a wave of determination and enthusiasm. Acknowledging that being a woman and succeeding is not just an issue of gender, but life stories, a truth and a belief that we all have within us.

Watch as the research team OCEARCH captures, tags and releases the great white shark Katharine off Cape Cod in August 2013.

She had us all fooled.

After another long silence, Katharine, the 2,300-pound white shark tagged Aug. 20, 2013, by research and advocacy group Wine Holder with Wine Glass Holder 2 Pieces Set Moose Wine Rack Wine Shelf Sculpture Crafts Home Decorations Interior Decorations (Shape Wine Glass Holder), pinged Friday night way off South Carolina’s coast.

The last time Katharine surfaced, according to the tracking device attached to her dorsal fin, was Feb. 25 near the Bahamas.

Most tracker batteries run out after five years, according to Chris Fischer, founding chairman and expedition leader at OCEARCH.

Katharine’s battery will be six years old in August.

“Of all the sharks we’ve tagged, she is, by far, the closest thing we have to a Floridian,” Fischer said in February. “It’s interesting to see how the people of Florida have fallen in love with this particular shark.”

In late February, white sharks tagged by OCEARCH had a “pinging party” up and down Florida’s east coast.

Besides Katharine, Miss May, OCEARCH’s newest white shark, “pinged” eight times Feb. 25. Miss May was tagged Feb. 15 off Mayport, Florida, and she is 10 feet long and weighs about 800 pounds.

Miss Costa, another frequent visitor to waters off the Treasure and Space coasts, surfaced around Feb, 26 near the Bahamas. It was her first surface since Jan. 28 when her last recorded ping was near Jacksonville. Miss Costa was more than 12 feet long and weighed 1,668 pounds when she was tagged Sept. 23, 2016.

It’s not unusual to see white sharks in Treasure Coast waters, however, according to outdoors writer Ed Killer, what gave Bramhall and the other men pause was the place where they encountered the big shark.

“It was in only about 72 feet of water, or about five miles from the inlet,” Bramhall told Killer. “It wasn’t far from some spots where we lobster dive in the summer. That made us think.”

55 Restaurants Go #StrawFreeWithLMC on Earth Day 2019

In honor of Earth Day, Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) is partnering with 54 restaurants that have agreed to refrain from offering plastic straws to their patrons and/or use non-plastic alternatives on April 22.

The #StrawFreewithLMC campaign includes restaurants adjacent to the 9.5 miles of sea turtle nesting beach patrolled by LMC. It is open to other restaurants interested in participating as well.

If you are in Palm Beach County, LMC invites you to visit participating restaurants, thank them for going #StrawFreewithLMC and encourage your favorite restaurant to join LMC’s Earth Day celebration.

“Several of our restaurant partners have either eliminated plastic straws or have adopted a ‘straws upon request policy’,” said Katie O’Hara, Conservation Program Coordinator at LMC, “This is a great first step. Working together, we can all help protect sea turtles and other wildlife by reducing straws and other single-use plastics throughout the year.”

The goal is to increase awareness so that this can include more restaurants in the future. Since LMC launched the first#StrawFreeWithLMC Earth Day campaign in 2018, many of its restaurant partners have taken steps to eliminate plastic straws, and/or have adopted a “straws upon request” policy year-round.

For more information about this initiative, contact Katie at kohara@marinelife.org.

LMC is also participating in the Great Give CityPlace Takover on April 24. This 24-hour community-wide event celebrates the spirit of giving and raises proceeds for local nonprofits. LMC representatives will be on Hibiscus Street in Downtown West Palm Beach from 4-7 p.m. for a fun night of philanthropy, education, information and activities.

Loxahatchee River restoration has been a goal for decades, but whether a nearly $500 million plan is the solution remains to be seen.

–>

A dispute over how best to cure the saltwater-poisoned Loxahatchee River reached Palm Beach County commissioners who this week took a stand against a key element in restoration plans — a pricey deep-water reservoir with walls nearly 20 feet high.

The proposed above-ground reservoir, which would be built on 1,600 acres of the Mecca Farms site west of Palm Beach Gardens, would store freshwater that could be fed to the river to fight a saltwater invasion from the Jupiter Inlet.

The Army Corps of Engineers is accepting comments through Monday on the $473 million Loxahatchee River Watershed Restoration Project. The chance to weigh in is what triggered the county commissioners’ vote Tuesday to support the overall plan, but ask for a reconsideration of the towering reservoir.

RELATED: Can the Loxahatchee River still be saved?

A handful of organizations, including Sustainable Palm Beach County, were asked to keep their opposition to the reservoir quiet in the fall so the long-delayed rescue operation could make it to the comment phase, said Holland Bar Stool NCAA Oklahoma Sooners Billiard Table Cover, 7-Feet, who is president of Sustainable Palm Beach County.

There was a fear the project, which is overshadowed by bigger-impact items such as the Yxsd Umbrella Bucket Wrought Iron Umbrella Stand Foyer Umbrella Storage Hanging Umbrella Stand (color White, Size 7.9x24in), would get derailed as it has for more than a decade without a united front.

“We were asked to stand down last year and that this piece would be fixed, but that never happened,” Marcus said. “The fact that the county commission, which should take a lead on these discussions, says the emperor has no clothes is big.”

Marcus said her group has shown that a shallow reservoir on Mecca Farms, that would basically turn Mecca into a restored wetlands area, could be used in conjunction with land donated by the nearby Avenir development to restore the river.

Mecca Farms, once slated for The Scripps Research Institute, was purchased but the South Florida Water Management District in 2003. It is located off Seminole Pratt Whitney Road between the Beeline Highway and Northlake Boulevard.

A shallow reservoir, Marcus said, could be built for an estimated $28 million as opposed to $180 million for an above-ground reservoir.

“From a public safety perspective, it’s the height of the above-ground reservoir and proposed berm that is a concern,” said Palm Beach County Commissioner Melissa McKinlay, whose district includes areas west of State Road 7 to Lake Okeechobee. “In addition to that is the price tag.”

Marine Hazards

There is a high likelihood for at least a few of today`s storms to produce wind gusts of 35 knots or greater from the Lake Toho chain south to Lake Okeechobee and Jupiter Inlet.

Spring football playbook: Centennial’s new secondary expects a strong test

CLOSE

Sports reporter Jon Santucci reveals his spring football game of the week and which players could be recruited.
Leah Voss, leah.voss@tcpalm.com

St. Lucie West Centennial’s senior-laden secondary was a Who’s Who in 2018.

The unit featured Dre Grace, a finalist for TCPalm’s All-Area Defensive Player of the Year, and Kenny Watson at cornerback and Dwight Toombs and Tahron Sims at safety. All four earned all-area honors and all four signed college scholarships.

This year’s group is trying to forge its own identity.

The first opportunity comes Friday in the Eagles spring game against Palm Beach Central and it’s four-star wide receiver — and Miami commit — Bryan Robinson.

“We have to see what we have at defensive back,” Centennial coach Josh Watkins said. “The guys on the roster last year didn’t get much playing time last year.”

Watkins plans to start Henry Pickens and Chris Smith at cornerback and Logan Lowry and Anthony Williams at safety.

The Eagles also plan to use several others in the secondary, including Javion Toombs — Dwight’s younger brother — and Deuce Dunbar.

Whoever is on the field, Watkins expects them to have their hands full.

“Palm Beach Central’s coach is a spread guy,” he said. “They’ll be similar to us, four-wide and Bryan Robinson is one of the top recruits in the nation. We’re going to get a good look. The secondary is going to be tested, for sure.”

Individual battles to watch

South Fork C Josh Cohen vs. Jensen Beach DL Manny Rogers. Rogers is No. 2 on the TCPalm Super 11; Cohen has multiple offers, including Middle Tennessee State. This should be fun to watch.

Palm Beach Central RB Derrick Cruickshank vs. Centennial LB Deshauwn Alleyne. Cruickshank, a state track qualifier, picked up multiple offers this spring. Alleyne, a rising junior, has picked up several Power 5 offers this spring. These two should collide often.

By the numbers

3: Consecutive Fort Pierce Westwood coaches (John Lima, Aaron Sheppard and Chris Hutchings) who led the Panthers to a spring game win in their debut. Jeff George Jr. makes his Westwood debut at Wellington on Friday.

5: Offensive linemen Martin County lost to injury in 2018. The Tigers were expecting the line to be a strength last fall, but injuries quickly turned that into a concern. Martin County coach Rod Harris expects to have an eight-player rotation in Friday’s jamboree at South Fork.

21: Players expected to dress for St. Edward’s in the Pirates spring game against Inlet Grove. Coach Bill Motta said the team has competition battles at quarterback and wide receiver this spring.

277: Points scored by Port St. Lucie in 2018. The offense has taken steps forward under fourth-year coach Chris Dent, as evidenced by the fact Port St. Lucie scored a total of 269 points from 2014-2016. The Jaguars travel to Jupiter on Friday for their spring game.

Looking for answers

Treasure Coast had the area’s top offensive line but is replacing two starters (David Perez and Billy West are stepping in at the guard spots) and moved two returning starters (Cody Olsen to tackle and James Wayne to center). It will be worth watching how the reshuffled line performs in Saturday’s jamboree at Palm Beach Lakes.

Okeechobee wants to find the right combination of players on the offensive and defensive lines, so expect the Brahmans to experiment with different pairings against East Lee County.

South Fork will use both rising senior Ryan Gross and rising sophomore Matt Bowman at quarterback in its spring jamboree. Gross is a three-year starter, but Bowman has an intriguing skill set.

Fort Pierce Central also will use two quarterbacks in its spring game at Park Vista. Rising senior Jake Burritt and rising sophomore Maurice Smith Jr. are competing for the starter’s spot.

Quotable

“I think you probably get the same answer from all three guys,” South Fork coach Mike Lavelle said of playing two rivals in a jamboree. “You have to temper excitement and the rivalry because we all have different goals in the spring. We are notoriously bad at winning spring games because we focus on us. It all depends on what you want to get out of it. I think the community is excited, but there isn’t the angst or negativity that there is in a normal rivalry game.”
